Restricted internal oxygen isotope exchange in calcite veins: Constraints from fluid inclusion and clumped isotope-derived temperatures

چکیده

The distribution of oxygen isotopes between calcite and fluid inclusions has demonstrated utility for reconstructing near-surface precipitation temperatures. For that formed at depth, however, the resilience this paleothermometer to diagenetic isotope alteration is poorly constrained. Clumped also document temperatures are similarly vulnerable alteration. Post-entrapment exchange fluid-inclusions could alter calcite-fluid (?c-fi), as well clumped composition (?47) calcite, therefore these two seemingly independent paleo-thermometers potentially linked via same process. Using closed-system batch fractionation equations, we have modelled various scenarios water host-rock during burial, internal exhumation. Assuming both record concordant time vein formation, our models predict if a fraction available isotopic interaction with inclusions, inclusion isotope-derived paleothermometers yield discrepant temperature estimates after We show thermometer more sensitive than mass balance determines sensitivity vulnerability (?18Ofi) overprinting. applied coupled measurements on veins from External Albanides (Albania), which were depth subsequently exhumed, in order compare natural samples model. These strongly calcite-water equilibrium temperatures, suggesting fluids may indeed be key parameter Even though appear insensitive towards exchange, model predicts low burial carbonate susceptible by under certain conditions.

Statistical clumped isotope signatures

High precision measurements of molecules containing more than one heavy isotope may provide novel constraints on element cycles in nature. These so-called clumped isotope signatures are reported relative to the random (stochastic) distribution of heavy isotopes over all available isotopocules of a molecule, which is the conventional reference. When multiple indistinguishable atoms of the same e...

Oxygen Isotope Fractionation between Coexisting Calcite and Dolomite.

The oxygen isotopic composition of calcite from carbonate rocks of the lower unit of the Flagstaff formation (Paleocene) exposed along the western margin of the Wasatch Plateau, Utah, is about 7 per mil lower than that of coexisting dolomite, suggesting that isotopic equilibration of these two minerals can occur at relatively low temperatures. Unlike recent isotopic evidence presented by Degens...

Oxygen isotope composition of subglacially precipitated calcite: possible paleoclimatic implications.

Isotopic analyses of subglacially precipitated calcite from near a modern temperate glacier show that the delta(18)O (= (18)O/(16)O relative to standard mean ocean water) of the calcite records the delta(18)O of the ice from that glacier. It may therefore be possible to determine the delta(18)O of Pleistocene ice sheets on the basis of isotopic analyses of calcite formed under that ancient ice....

Use of Clumped-isotope Thermometry to Constrain the Crystallization Temperature of Diagenetic Calcite

We describe an approach to estimating the crystallization temperatures of diagenetic calcites using clumped-isotope thermometry, a paleothermometer based on the C–O-bond enrichment in carbonates. Application of this thermometer to calcified gastropod shells and calcite cements in an early Eocene limestone from the Colorado Plateau reveals a record of calcite precipitation and replacement at tem...

Hydrothermal evolution of the Sar-Kuh porphyry copper deposit, Kerman, Iran: A fluid inclusion and sulfur isotope investigation

Sar-Kuh porphyry copper deposit is located 6 km southwest of the Sar-Cheshmeh copper mine, Kerman Province, Iran. Based on field geology, petrography and fluid inclusions studies, four alteration types have been identified in the Sar-Kuh area. Early hydrothermal alteration formed a potassic zone in the central parts of Mamzar granite/grano-diorite stock and propylitic alteration in its peripher...
